Living Educational Theory Research: "Identifying and Meeting the Professional Needs of Educators and Contributing to Contemporary Discourses with Values of Human Flourishing"
I qualified and worked as a teacher before qualifying and practicing as an Educational Psychologist working for a number of English Local Authorities. During the final years of my career I developed and implemented an inclusive educational policy for a local authority (http://www.spanglefish.com/livinglegacies/livinglegacies-thebook.asp). This included developing and providing CPD for teachers and other professional practitioners. This involved an extensive programme of educational opportunities and experiences for children to engage in education as a life-long values-laden process of contributing to, and benefitting from, their own learning and other peoples, for the flourishing of Humanity.
What nagged at me over the years were questions like, "how could I know whether what I did was successful or counterproductive?". It was not until I began to develop my knowledge, understanding and practice of Jack Whitehead's work on Living Educational Theory Research (https://www.actionresearch.net/) that I was able to begin to create useful answers. I give an account of my professional development and learning in my doctoral thesis, which can be accessed from my website http://www.spanglefish.com/mariessite.
Since my career as an educational psychologist ended I have focussed on providing support for professional practitioners worldwide developing their knowledge, understanding and practice of Living Educational Theory Research. Some groups and individuals can be found on https://www.actionresearch.net/writings/posters/homepage2023.pdf. It includes contributing to conferences, workshops and publications nationally and internationally, details of which can be found on my website http://www.spanglefish.com/mariessite. I am currently a visiting research fellow with the University of Cumbria (UK) and lead editor of the Educational Journal of Living Theories (https://ejolts.net/).
